Michelle's Story

My Cantonese learning experience

Iˇ¦m interested in Cantonese for years. Due to the Cantonese-
pronounced series were very famous about 10 years ago, I decided to
learn Cantonese. I started to collect some information about
learning Cantonese. At that time, there are few self-learning
materials about Cantonese. That makes it hard to learn Cantonese by
myself, but I never give up to learn. I went through every
bookstore in my neighborhood and try to search some related books.
Amazingly, the most effective tool that helped me best is a set of
cassettes.
One afternoon, when I go to a bookstore and search for books for
almost three hours, I felt very tired and decided to go to a record
store and listen to some music for relaxing. In that store, I found
something really interesting. There is a set of Cantonese
cassettes. It printed out all the Cantonese lyrics and marked it
aside with spelling sound. Thatˇ¦s really a brand new way to learn
Cantonese! It contains songs from Andy Lau, Aaron KuoˇKsome famous
Cantonese singers. I decided to buy this right at the moment I see
it. And that is the real thing that helped me a lot in learning the
pronunciation of Cantonese. I listened to the cassette times after
times. Try to first familiar with the sound and then try to repeat
after the singerˇ¦s voice. Soon, I found that this speeded up my
learning. I can remember the sound without seeing the lyrics.
Whatˇ¦s more, this really interested me a lot in Cantonese.
After this, I found that whatever languages Iˇ¦m interested in, if I
choose some songs to assist my learning, I could learn faster. No
matter Japanese, Spanish, or German, I can learn it much quicker if
I use some songs, and TV series to support. I think this is what we
call ˇ§assisted-learningˇ¨. If you can learn something from the
area and tool that you are interested in, then learning would become
a leisure, a hobby that you prefer to do than learn. If you can
combine learning and pleasuring together, not only you can learn
with more fun, you can also learn much better!
